S.C.L.C./W.O.M.E.N. (Women’s Organizational Movement For Equality Now), Inc. is announces its 33rd Annual Drum Major for Justice Awards Dinner at the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel, in downtown Atlanta, Georgia, Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. This year’s Honorees will include actors and philanthropists Sean Penn and Samuel L. Jackson, in addition to CNN’s Don Lemon.

The awards ceremony recognizes individuals and organizations who are accomplished, barrier-breaking, servant leaders – present day “Drum Majors” – who embody and perpetuate the philosophy, vision and mission of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through success in their respective fields and humanitarian service.

This signature event of SCLC/W.O.M.E.N. Inc. is held annually on the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination to mark the passing of one of the greatest leaders in the history of the world, and to inspire others to carry on spirit and work of Dr. King’s legacy through service and leadership. The awards dinner is chaired this year by Wells Fargo Bank Vice President Candy Moore.

Mrs. Evelyn Gibson Lowery, Founder and CEO of the organization, will bestow awards on 14 honorees. Lowery launched this awards ceremony in 1980 to salute those who represent the manifestation of the life and work Dr. King. In one of his final speeches, King said he wanted to be remembered as a “Drum Major for Justice.”

“We carefully choose our Honorees based upon Dr. King’s legacy – those who give of themselves for the greater good of humankind. Our Honorees use their gifts and talents to pursue something greater than themselves; and it is this distinction that sets them apart and why we recognize their endeavors and achievements,” Mrs. Lowery continued.
