Fulton County voters can cast ballots and get their flu shots beginning Oct. 27

ATLANTA -- Fulton County Voters can “Vote and Vax” beginning Saturday, October 27, 2012.  Voters can cast their ballots and obtain their annual flu slots as a part of an effort to reduce the risk of flu among citizens.  Vote and Vax primarily targets adults aged 50 or older.

Bi-partisan rally to drum up support for charter schools

ATLANTA -- A grassroots bi-partisan charter school rally is being planned for Saturday, Oct. 27.

The rally is being held by Moms for School Choice, Heritage Preparatory Charter School and Georgia's Voice for Educational Choice. It has grabbed the attention of members from both political parties.

"The theme of the rally is 'Charter Schools WORK!' because charter schools work for students, families, communities and Georiga," Mom for School Choice member Kimberly Cochran said in a statement.

So far, Ga. Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers (R-Woodstock), State Rep. Alisha Thomas Morgan (D-Austell), DeKalb County Board of Education member Nancy Jester and Cherokee County Board of Education member Michael Geist are scheduled to attend the rally.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. on Oct.

Fulton wants seniors to 'Join the Conversation' regarding strategies to meet growing senior needs

ATLANTA -- The Fulton County Housing and Human Services Department, Office of Aging wants seniors and their caregivers to participate in focus groups designed to plan strategies for meeting the growing needs of seniors.  The focus group meetings are designed to plan strategies to help seniors to age-in- place and maintain their independence.  Caregivers of more fragile seniors are also urged to participate in the conversations about program and service needs.

The Office of Aging will host four “Join the Conversation” meetings beginning  Monday, October 22, 2012.  The meetings will be held on the following dates:

10:00 AM – 12:00 PM & 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM

Wednesday, October 24, 2012 – Harriett G. Darnell Senior Multipurpose Facility

City of Atlanta hosts 1st Bicycle Expo!

ATLANTA -- Bicycle commuters often look at me sideways for not riding my bicycle to work because I live closeby.  And I must confess, I'd save a lot of money, time and get some exercise to boot if I rode my new 10-speed to work.  During the month of October, the city of Atlanta is hosting its first Cycle Expo at City Hall in the atrium.

Make plans to join the Department of Planning and Community Development, Office of Sustainability and several of our transportation partners for a fun and informative event.

The city of Atlanta has seen a significant increase in the number of bicycle commuters and is committed to adding new bike lanes and routes where feasible.

Over the next three years, the city of Atlanta is poised to construct 34 miles of high-quality bicycle facilities

One-woman play 'Fighting for the Title' at Spelman for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

ATLANTA -- In recognition of October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Spelman College Department of Drama and Dance, the Office of Research Resources, the Women’s Research and Resource Center and the Office of Student Activities have partnered to present Fighting for the Title,” a one-woman musical written, produced and performed by award-winning gospel artist Delores Burgess, Oct. 4-7, 2012. In the play, Burgess blends her voice in R&B, gospel and blues styles to depict nine characters and share her triumphant and traumatic battle with breast cancer.

Atlanta (Sept. 17, 2012) -- Award-winning director Ava DuVernay will break down the business of filmmaking during a discussion on Black to the Future: Era of the Artist Entrepreneur. Presented by 2012-2013 William and Camille Cosby Endowed Professor in the Humanities, Tananarive Due, the evening with the screenwriter and director will feature a clip from DuVernay’s prize-winning film Middle of Nowhere and dialogue centered on her artist-entrepreneur business model “Black Art Rising.”

Fulton Fresh celebrates end of 2012 season

ATLANTA -- Fulton County Cooperative Extension will celebrate the end of the second season of the Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market on Wednesday, September 12th at the Shrine of the Black Madonna located at 946 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd., SW, Atlanta, GA 30310 from 10:00 am – 11:30 am.  

Fulton County Cooperative Extension, in an effort to address health disparities, began the Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market Program in 2011.  Fulton County residents living in “food deserts." areas with limited access to mainstream grocery stores, are able to get fresh vegetables and nutrition education from the Fulton Fresh mobile units.

In response to public demand, the program added an additional mobile unit to reach more communities.  The Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market trucks delivered an estimated 8 tons of fresh produce to more than 1,800 residents living in 12 areas identified as food deserts.   In 2011, Fulton Fresh provided
