Atlanta Caribbean Carnival prepares for major celebration Memorial weekend

"Carnival is mas and music!" The dynamic theme of the 2012 Atlanta Caribbean Carnival was vibrant and alive Saturday, April 7, during the official launch and press conference for the annual cultural spectacular, held at the Atlanta downtown Sheraton.   

With 2012, being the 50th anniversary of Independence for both Jamaica and Carnival's celebrated home nation of Trinidad, expectations have heightened for this years event, taking place Memorial weekend in the historic Auburn Avenue district. 

"Jamaica and Trinidad are going to mashup (slang: party hard) the place!" joked Vin Martin, Jamaica's honorary consul to Atlanta.  Receiving excited applause, Martin gave words of welcome to the Caribbean Carnival and the upcoming Jamaica Jubilee events.

Social inequity, economic progress and poverty alleviaton will be topics of discussion during the “Today’sOther America: Poverty in America” forum -a CNN Dialogues event to be held on Wednesday, April 18, 7-8:30pm, at Georgia State University’s Rialto Center for the Arts, 80 Forsythe Street, NW.

CNNMoney anchor and business correspondent Poppy Harlow will moderate the forum. Harlow, who is based in New York, anchors much of CNNMoney’s video coverage of global business events, business news updates, and financial news.

S.C.L.C./W.O.M.E.N. (Women’s Organizational Movement For Equality Now), Inc. is announces its 33rd Annual Drum Major for Justice Awards Dinner at the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel, in downtown Atlanta, Georgia, Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. This year’s Honorees will include actors and philanthropists Sean Penn and Samuel L. Jackson, in addition to CNN’s Don Lemon.

The awards ceremony recognizes individuals and organizations who are accomplished, barrier-breaking, servant leaders – present day “Drum Majors” – who embody and perpetuate the philosophy, vision and mission of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through success in their respective fields and humanitarian service.
