Workshop to teach diabetics to protect health during the summer

EAST POINT, Ga. -- Hot summer days can present risks to diabetics. Seniors at Fulton County’s H.J. C. Bowden Senior Facility will learn how to protect their health, particularly if they have diabetes.

On Thursday, July 10, 2014, a workshop will provide 10 safety tips for taking care of diabetes at home and on the job during the summer. During the two-hour workshop, which begins at 10 a.m., seniors will also see a video and receive a safety package providing information on proper diet, hydration and personal care.

Workshop to focus on safe use of medications

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Fulton County’s Harriett G. Darnell Senior Multipurpose Facility will host an information session on the safe use of medications on Thursday, June 26.

The one-hour workshop will be held from 11 a.m. to noon. The Darnell Multipurpose Facility is located at 677 Fairburn Road NW in Atlanta. For more information about the workshop, call Meletta Clayton at 404-613-8580.

Wolf Creek Amphitheater presents One Love reggae concert

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Treat dad to a special event on Father’s Day at the Wolf Creek Amphitheater’s One Love reggae concert.

Enjoy the food, music and culture of Jamaica with Sanchez, Everton Blender, Admiral Bailey, Frankie Paul and Leroy ‘Heptone’ Sibble. The gates open at 3 p.m., with show time at 5 p.m. Lawn seats are $25 for adults, and children ages 12 and under are free in general admission.

Atlanta BeltLine to host bicycle tour this weekend

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta BeltLine Partnership will team up with the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition for a tour this weekend.

The 7th annual Atlanta BeltLine Bicycle Tour will be held Saturday, June 14. Staggered rides through the BeltLine's 45 neighborhoods will begin at 9 a.m. from the Historic Fourth Ward Skatepark.

Riders have a choice of two tours: the full BeltLine, which is 27 miles long; and the East Meets West route -- 16 miles of some of the trail's most beautiful parks.

Advance registration is $30 for members of the Atlanta BeltLine or Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, and $35 for the general public. On-site registration opens at 8 a.m. and is $40 for members and $45 for non-members.

Every Body Walk! coming to Greenbriar Mall

Every Body Walk! coming to Greenbriar Mall

ATLANTA -- Kaiser Permanente will bring its Every Body Walk! program to Greenbriar Mall this week.

The initiative is desigend to encourage participants to walk for at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week.

Beginning Thursday, June 12, Kaiser Permanente will lead weekly walks through the mall. The first walk will begin at 11 a.m. in front of Burlington Coat Factory. Walkers will have a chance to win door prizes and other small gifts.

Kerry W. Kohnen, president of Kasier Permanente of Georgia, said he is excited to bring Every Body Walk! to southwest Atlanta.

"Creating healthier communities is central to our mission," Kohnen said in a release. "We believe that exercise is medicine. These weekly walks allow us to connect with the southwest Atlanta community outside of the exam room."

Fulton County Aviation Community Cultural Center to open June 19

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Fulton County Commissioner Emma I. Darnell, District 5, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners and Fulton County Arts and Culture, will celebrate the Grand Opening of the Fulton County Aviation Community Cultural Center (ACCC) on Thursday, June 19 at 10 a.m.

The grand opening celebration will kick off three days of activities organized to introduce the new facility to the community and increase awareness of the center, its programming and activities. 

The center is located at 3900 Aviation Circle, Atlanta on the grounds of Fulton County Airport – Brown Field.  It is designed as a community gathering place and will focus on the following types of programming:

Black Women Film Festival returns June 13-15

ATLANTA -- The Black Women Film Network (BWFN) will present its 10th Annual Black Women Film Festival June 13-15, 2014 in Atlanta.

The three-day event – sponsored by BET Networks, Spelman College, Atlanta Technical College, 11Alive, Moguldom Studios and Madame Noire – kicks off Friday, June 13 at noon at Spelman College (Sci Center NASA Auditorium) with seven films by or about African-American women, including the controversial 72% (directed by Janice Garcia and Jeremy Batchelor), a documentary that explores the single mother phenomenon in the black community.
