ATLANTA -- Fulton County Voters can “Vote and Vax” beginning Saturday, October 27, 2012.  Voters can cast their ballots and obtain their annual flu slots as a part of an effort to reduce the risk of flu among citizens.  Vote and Vax primarily targets adults aged 50 or older.

ATLANTA -- According to the Georgia Department of Public Health, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed non-skin cancer among Georgia women. On October 17, 2012, from 10:00am – 2:00pm, the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness, Division of Women’s Health will rock to “Motown Melodies” at its Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Event at the Adamsville Recreation Center where residents can get a free clinical breast exam, blood pressure checks, glucose and HIV screenings.

“October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time we all can encourage the women we care about to get screened,” states Patrice A. Harris, MD, Director of Fulton County Health Services.  “Early detection is key.”

One-woman play 'Fighting for the Title' at Spelman for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

ATLANTA -- In recognition of October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Spelman College Department of Drama and Dance, the Office of Research Resources, the Women’s Research and Resource Center and the Office of Student Activities have partnered to present Fighting for the Title,” a one-woman musical written, produced and performed by award-winning gospel artist Delores Burgess, Oct. 4-7, 2012. In the play, Burgess blends her voice in R&B, gospel and blues styles to depict nine characters and share her triumphant and traumatic battle with breast cancer.

Performances for "Fighting for the Title" will be held in the Rockefeller Fine Arts Building, Baldwin Burroughs Theater, 350 Spelman Lane, Atlanta 30314. GPS Address: 440 Westview Drive, S.W. Atlanta, GA 30310.

Flu vaccinations available at Fulton County health centers

ATLANTA -- Flu season is around the corner.  Fulton County Health Services encourages everyone to get vaccinated, especially children.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that getting vaccinated is the first and most important step in protecting against this serious disease. While there are many different flu viruses, the flu vaccine protects against the three main flu strains that research indicates will cause the most illness during the flu season.  The Fulton Department of Health and Wellness is providing flu shots at seven centers from 8:30 am until 4:00 pm. 

Residents can get a flu shot or the nasal mist (2 to 49 years) for $25.  Visa and Master Card (credit and debit), Medicaid, Cigna, United Health care and cash are accepted forms of payment. Flu vaccinations are available at the following health centers:

ATLANTA – 11Alive news reporter Jerry Carnes, a prostate cancer survivor, will be among the honored guests at the free Home Run for Health event in Atlanta on Saturday. Carnes will be joined by former Braves player Pete Smith, the Atlanta Falcons cheerleaders and Freddie the Falcon to encourage men to come out for free health screenings. The screenings include blood pressure and BMI checks, as well as those for prostate cancer. Everyone who receives a screening will receive two free tickets to a Braves game.  

Men are encouraged to bring their children, baseball gloves and ball to enter to win the Biggest Game of Catch, which will begin at 10:15 a.m. The last father-and-son or father-and-daughter team standing will win a Braves season ticket package for 2013. Drawings will be held for other great prizes, like a signed Chipper Jones bat.

ATLANTA, Ga.  – Augusta resident Darren Bell, who has struggled with congestive heart failure since 2005, received the gift of new life when Piedmont cardiovascular surgeon David Dean, M.D., performed a life-saving heart transplant for Bell on August 3, after months of waiting on the transplant list.

Last November, Bell noticed his symptoms of shortness of breath, swelling and fatigue were getting worse and went to Piedmont’s Advanced Heart Failure Center in Atlanta for a full evaluation.

Atlanta research coalition gets $31 million grant

ATLANTA -- An Atlanta research partnership responsible for the South's first human hand transplant has secured a new $31 million federal grant to continue a coalition launched five years ago.

The Clinical & Translational Science Institute is a partnership led by Emory University. It also includes other major health care and research players like Georgia Tech, Morehouse School of Medicine, Grady Health System and the VA Medical Center.

The alliance was formed to connect a range of researchers, technology developers and medical professionals who actually treat people. The idea is to help research from clinical and laboratory settings translate into better outcomes for patients.
