Free Hawks playoffs tickets hidden around Atlanta

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Hawks have made it to the NBA Playoffs for the sixth year in a row, and the team is celebrating with a fun scavenger hunt for fans.

The Hawks will hide 50 foam fingers at various places throughout Atlanta on Thursday and Friday. Each finger will hold two tickets to a Hawks home game.

Fans who find the fingers are invited to tweet pictures of themselves with the hashtag #PlayoffFever. Everyone who tweets will be entered into a drawing to win VIP seats and a Hawks jersey signed by Josh Smith.

The Hawks have provided a few clues about where they plan to hide some of the fingers:

1. One of NBC's Thursday night comedies contains the name of several locations.

2. One location's tagline is "Weekends are overrated."

3. The Hawks plan to connect the East, West, North and South at one location.

2013 Georgia Rides to the Capitol to raise cycling support

ATLANTA -- The 2013 "Georgia Rides to the Capitol" event will be held through the city on Tuesday, March 26.

A spokeswoman for the ride said more than 1,000 cyclists are expected to participate, as part of the Metro Atlanta Mayors Association "GEORGIA BIKES!" program. The bike ride will be escorted by police, and run track through Decatur and Roswell. Leading the pack will be Commissioner Fred Boykin and Mayor Jere Wood, along with more city officials.

During the "Georgia Rides to the Capitol" event, cyclists hope to raise support for other types of transportation through the metro region. Plus, they hope conditions will improve to allow easier cycling, including the development of regional systems and both on-road bicycling facilities and multi-use trails.

Fulton residents encouraged to 'Walk Ga.'

ATLANTA -- Fulton County Cooperative Extension wants all residents to develop regular physical activity habits, get healthier and have fun while “walking across Georgia”. Daily activities such as walking the dog, going for a jog and playing catch with the kids quickly add up to virtual miles that are used to “walk” across the state.

“We invite all residents who made New Year’s resolutions to get fit and be healthier to join our initiative,” says Menia Chester, Director of Fulton County Cooperative Extension. “Although this event is called Walk Georgia, any form of activity can be logged to track mileage. The primary goal is to get moving.”

Shop with a Jock takes kids on Falcons shopping spree

ATLANTA -- Forty kids from the Odyssey Villas apartments in Vine City get a chance to go on a shopping spree this week with some of their football heroes.

The Shop with a Jock program pairs Atlanta Falcons players, including tight end Tony Gonzalez and wide receiver Julio Jones, with disadvantaged children for a Christmas shopping trip to Walmart.

The Walmart on Lawrenceville Suwanee Road in Suwanee has agreed to host the Shop with a Jock kids at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Participating children are selected through Odyssey Villas' Action Ministries Atlanta program.

Kennesaw, S.C. residents win Atlanta Marathon

Kennesaw, S.C. residents win Atlanta Marathon

ATLANTA -- Nearly 2,500 people hit the streets of Atlanta Saturday for this year's Atlanta Marathon and Marathon Relay.

Kennesaw resident Reuben Mwei was the clear winner of the marathon. He broke through the tape at 2:23:25, more than eight minutes before the second place finisher, to take home the $1,000 grand prize.

Saturday's race was the 26 year old's first-ever marathon. He also won the Allstate Life Insurance Atlanta 13.1 Marathon on Oct. 7 with a time of 1:09:12.

The second man to cross the finish line was Marietta resident Malcolm Campbell, 41, whose final time was 2:31:26. Twenty-nine-year-old Justin Gillette of Goshen, Ind., winner of the 2011 Atlanta Marathon, placed third with a time of 2:36:27.

City of Atlanta hosts 1st Bicycle Expo!

ATLANTA -- Bicycle commuters often look at me sideways for not riding my bicycle to work because I live closeby. And I must confess, I'd save a lot of money, time and get some exercise to boot if I rode my new 10-speed to work. During the month of October, the city of Atlanta is hosting its first Cycle Expo at City Hall in the atrium.

Make plans to join the Department of Planning and Community Development, Office of Sustainability and several of our transportation partners for a fun and informative event.

The city of Atlanta has seen a significant increase in the number of bicycle commuters and is committed to adding new bike lanes and routes where feasible.

Over the next three years, the city of Atlanta is poised to construct 34 miles of high-quality bicycle facilities.

ATLANTA -- The 2012 London Paralympics begin Wednesday, and several Georgians are hoping to bring home the gold at the Games.

Richard Browne, 21, Athletics
Browne is a native of Jackson, Miss., and now attends Morehouse College in Atlanta. He suffered a below-the-knee amputation after an accident in 2009, but quickly bounced back to become a Paralympian. Browne will compete in the 100m, 4x100m and high jump. He won silver in the high jump and bronze in the 100m at the 2012 Paralympic Trials.
